Sergei Movsesian, the grandmaster with the second rating among the Armenian chess players of the world, will officially represent Armenia since December 30, 2010. FIDE has confirmed his transfer to the Armenian Chess Federation from the Slovak Chess Federation.

GM Zaven Andriasian has scored 5 points out of 7 at the main tournament of the festival, which is being held in Groningen, Netherlands. Andriasian is half a point the leaders, GM Dejan Bojkov (Bulgaria) and IM Ilya Nyzhnyk (Ukraine). Vahe Baghdasaryan has scored 3,5 points.

In the Open C Anna-Maja Kazarian has got 4,5 points and is on the 4th place.

Two rounds are left before the end of the festival.

In the Open C Anna-Maja Kazarian has got 4 points and is on the 3rd place.
 
27-Dec-2010 Tournament Devoted to the 50th Anniversary of the Chess School
 
Rapid tournament was held in Yerevan which was devoted to the 50th Anniversary of the chess school after Genrikh Kasparian. 94 chess players, including 20 Grandmasters took part in the tournament. GM Tigran L. Petrosian scored 9,5 points out of 11 and took the first prize. GM Hrant Melkumyan (9) and GM Gabriel Sargissian (8,5) were respectively the 2nd and the 3rd.

President of the Republic of Armenia, President of the Armenian Chess Federation Serzh Sargsyan was present at the ceremony devoted to the anniversary of the chess school.
 
27-Dec-2010 Ambartsumova in Russian Blitz Cup
 
Armenian WIM Karina Ambartsumova scored 8 points out of 11 and shared the 3rd-4th places among the 66 participants (16 of whom were grandmasters) of the Russian Women's Blitz Cup which was held in Moscow.

WGM Valentina Gunina took the first prize with 10 points.

Armenian WIM Karina Ambartsumova scored 7,5 points out of 9 and took the first prize in the semi-final of the Russian Rapid Cup which was held in Moscow.

24-Dec-2010 Aronian Will Play With Grischuk
 
Seven of the eight qualifiers for the World Champion's title confirmed their participation in the candidates' matches by the deadline. Only Magnus Carlsen didn't sign the contract with FIDE and, according to the regulations, he was replaced with Grischuk. Thus, it finally became clear that the following matches will be held at the first round of the qualifers' matches: Aronian-Grischuk, Kramnik-Radjabov, Topalov-Kamsky, Gelfand-Mamedyarov. In case of a victory over Grischuk, Aronian will meet with the winner of the match Kramnik-Radjabov.

We remind that the qualifiers' matches will be held in Kazan, Russia in May, 2011.

GM Zaven Andriasian and Vahe Baghdasaryan have scored 2,5 points each out of 3 at the main tournament of the festival, which is being held in Groningen, Netherlands. Armenian chess players are half a point behind the leader, IM Ilya Nizhnik (Ukraine).

10-year-old Anna-Maja Kazarian (Netherlands) continues her victorious performance in the Open C. She had a victory also at the third round and now is sharing the 1st-2nd places with a hundred-percent result.

At the second round of the main tournament of the festival, which is being held in Groningen, Netherlands GM Zaven Andriasian won FM Daniel Naroditsky (USA), Vahe Baghdasaryan - IM Davit Lobzhanidze (Georgia). The two Armenian chess players are currently leading the table with 5 other participants of the tournament. Anna-Maja Kazarian (Netherlands), who is playing in the Open C, also had a victory at the second round and now is among the four leaders.

GM Tigran Gharamian has scored 6,5 points out of 8 before the last round of the open which is being held in Vandoeuvre, France. Armenian chess player is solely leading the tournament. Gharamian has got half a point more than the nearest opponents, GMs Cornette (France), Malakhatko (Belgium), Sanikidze (Georgia). The question of the first prize will be solved in the games Gharamian-Malakhatko, Cornette-Sanikidze.

9-year-old Armenian chess player Samuel Sevian has become the youngest chess master in the history of the USA after the tournament which was held in San Fransisco.

World Chess Federation has awarded FIDE Master's Title to the silver medal-holder of the European U16 Championship, Karen H. Grigoryan and FIDE Candidate Master's Title to the silver medal-holder of the European U8 Championship, Shant Sargsyan.
 
21-Dec-2010 Armenia in the World Team Championship
 
Armenian national team is going to take part in the 8th World Team Championship which is to be held in Ningbo, China from 16 to 27 July, 2011. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has made this decision.

10 teams are going to be take part in the World Championship, including Russia (current World Champion); Ukraine, Israel, Hungary (according to the results of the 39th World Chess Olympiad); Azerbaijan (winner of the European Championship); Winners of Continental Championships of America, Asia, Africa; China (organizing country) and Armenia.

Armenia has participated in all the World Team Championships since 1993 and has become a bronze medal-holder thrice (1997-Lucerne, 2001-Yerevan, 2005-Beersheba).

The Champion of Armenia, 21-year-old GM Avetik Grigoryan brilliantly won in the open which was held in Bansko, Bulgaria. Grigoryan scored 8 points out of 9 and solely took the first prize. Avetik also raised his rating with 19 points.

GM Sergei Movsesian took 10 points out of 13 and shared the 7th place among 723 participants of the European Rapid Championship which was held in Warsaw, Poland. Movsesian was only half a point behind the champion, Zoltan Almasi (Hungary).

GM Zaven Andriasian scored 9,5, GM Hrair Simonian - 9, Vahe Baghdasaryan and WGM Evgeniya Doluhanova - 8 points each.

Only Grandmasters are going to take part in the Hightest League of the Armenian 71st Championship to be held in Yerevan from 10 to 22 January, 2011. 12 chess players will play for the title of the champion and the only empty place in the Armenian national team. GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France) took the title of the champion with 22 points.

However, in the final round Nakhapetian had a loss in the game with GM Igor Lysyj who took the first prize, having scored 7,5 points out of 9. Nakhapetian had 6 points and took the 9th place among the 81 participants.

WIM Karina Ambartsumova scored 5,5 points and was known as the best among the female participants.

GM Levon Aronian and GM Sergei Movsesian, the two chess players with the highest ratings among the Armenians of the world, continue their cooperation. These days they are training together in Berlin.

We remind that Movsesian is getting prepared for the Grandmaster Tournament which is to start on December 28th, 2010 in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and Aronian - for the supertournament which is to start on January 14, 2011 in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.

At the opening ceremony of the World Women's Championship colour drawing was held, according to which at the first game of the first round all the odd numbers are going to play with whites and all the evens - with blacks. So, it is already known with what colours Armenian chess players are going to play today: Lilit Mkrtchian is going to play with whites, while Elina Danielian, Almira Skripchenko-Aghababian and Dina Kagramanov - with blacks.

GM Krikor-Sevag Mekhitarian has scored 3 points out of 5 in the Brazil Championship which is being held in Americana, Sao Paolo. Mekhitarian is one point behind the leaders, GMs Fier, Vescovi and IM Di Berardino.

Armenian national team has become the champion of the World Youth U16 Olympiad in Burdur, Turkey. Armenian chess players who were playing wonderfully during the tournament, have already secured their first place independent of the results of the last round.

This is the second time Armenia has achieved the title of the World Youth Olympiad Champion. Our team had such a great success also in 1998 when future famous grandmasters Levon Aronian, Gabriel Sargissian, Tigran L. Petrosian and Varuzhan Akobian were in composition of the team.

Our warmest congratulations to Armenian young chess players on this new brilliant achievement!

Armenian grandmasters Elina Danielian and Lilit Mkrtchian are taking part in the World Women's Championship which is being held with the knock-out system in Antakya (ancient name - Antioch), Hatay, Turkey from December 4 to 24, 2010. Armenian chess players from abroad, Almira Skripchenko-Aghababian (France) and Dina Kagramanov (Canada) are also participating in the tournament. The matches will consist of two main games during the first five rounds.
 
At the first round Danielian is going to play with Shadrina (Russia), Mkrtchian - with Zhang Xiaowen (China), Skripchenko - with Foisor (Romania), Kagramanov - with Dzagnidze (Georgia).

3-Dec-2010 Tournament Devoted to the Anniversary of the School
 
From 22 to 25 December, 2010 a rapid chess tournament (Swiss System, 11 rounds) devoted to the 50th Anniversary of the chess scool after Genrikh Kasparian is going to be held in Yerevan, Armenia. Alumni and current pupils of the school are welcome to take part in the event. 10 alumni living abroad are invited.

The prize fund of the tournament is 2.000.000 drams. The first prize-holder will receive 500.000 drams.

GM Krikor-Sevag Mekhitarian has scored 1,5 points after three rounds of the Brazil Championship which is being held in Americana, Sao Paolo. The leaders are GM Giovanni Vescovi, GM Alexandr Fier and IM Diego Di Berardino with 2,5 points each.

The 77th Brazil Championship, 6 of the 12 participants of which are famous grandmasters, is being held in Americana, Sao Paolo.

Krikor-Sevag Mekhitarian started the tournament with an impressive victory over one of the strongest participants, GM Gilberto Milos. At the second round Armenian grandmaster had a draw with IM Everaldo Matsuura.

Mekhitarian has scored 1,5 points after the second round and is only half a point behind the leader, GM Rafael Leitao.
