Olympic champion GM Gabriel Sargissian will take part in the Politiken Cup which starts in Helsingor, not far from Copenhagen, Denmark on 18th July, 2009. More than 300 chess players will take part in the event. Sargissian's main opponents in this open tournament will be GMs Malakhov (Russia), Nielsen (Denmark), Tiviakov (Netherlands), Dreev (Russia), Postny (Israel), Avrukh (Israel), Kuzubov (Ukraine), Berg (Sweden).

Zaven Andriasian's Success |

Young chess player Zaven Andriasian (Armenia) had great success in the big open which was held in Benasque, Spain. Zaven scored 9 points out of 11 and shared the 1st-4th places with GMs Mihail Marin (Ruminia), Kiril Georgiev (Bulgaria) and Gopal Narayanan (India).
Hrant Melkumyan and Karen Movsziszian, the other two Armenian grandmasters, also played successfully in the tournament. They were only half a point behind the winners and shared the 5th-8th places.
469 chess players participated in the tournament, approximately 40 of which were grandm.

Mher Hovhanisian - The Champion of Belgium |

IM Mher Hovhanisian, who represents Armenia but lives in Belgium, achieved the title of the champion of that country. Hovhanisian scored 6,5 points out of 9 in the Belgian Championship which was held in Namur. GM Alexandre Dgebuadze (Belgium) also had such a result, but Armenian chess player won in the tie-break and became the champion.

GM Varuzhan Akobian (USA) scored 6,5 points out of 9 and shared the 3rd-7th places in the World Open which was held in Philadelphia (USA). Akobian was only half a point behind the winners - GMs Evgeny Najer (Russia) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA).

Arman Pashikian, Tigran Kotanjian, Avetik Grigorian, Samvel Ter-Sahakyan, Levon Babujian (Armenia), Ferenc Berkesh (Hungary), Li Chao (China), Sergei Zhigalko (Belarus), Igor Lisij (Russia), Rinat Jumabaev (Kazakhstan) will participate in the round-robin tournament.
