Armenian GM Varuzhan Akobian scored 5,5 points out of 7 and took the first place in North American open which was held in Las Vegas.
 
27-Dec-2009 National Team is Getting Ready for the World Championship  
 

Armenian chess national team, which is going to participate in the World Championship (to be held in Bursa, Turkey from January 4 to 13, 2010), is having the final preparations in Tsakhkadzor these days.

26-Dec-2009 "Chess-64" on Armenian TV  
 

The next issue of "Chess-64" TV program (author and commentator Gaguik Oganessian) will be broadcast on Armenian national TV (h1) on sunday, December 27 at 11:40. Repeat on satellite broadcasting at 13:10 and on the next day at 5:45 (Yerevan time).
 

25-Dec-2009 Igor Zaitsev - Champion of Moscow Veterans  
 

Armenian GM Igor Zaitsev took the title of Moscow veterans' rapid chess champion. He scored 7,5 points out of 9 in the championship which had 84 participants.
 

25-Dec-2009 Avetik Grigoryan's 3rd Prize  
 

GM Avetik Grigoryan scored 7 points out of 9 and took the 3rd place among 136 participants of the tournament which was held in Urmia, Iran. Grigoryan was only half a point behind the winner, GM Farid Abbasoviani (Azerbaijan).
 

24-Dec-2009 President of RA Met the National Team  
 

President of the Republic of Armenia, President of the Armenian Chess Federation Serzh Sargsyan visited Tsakhkadzor olympic centre where the members of Armenian national team are having the final training camp before the World Team Championship which is going to be held in Bursa, Turkey during the first days of the new year.
 

24-Dec-2009 Danielian and Aginian Could Not Continue the Tournament  
 

WGM Elina Danielian had to leave the Groningen tournament and return home because of her family misfortune, her Father's untimely death. Elina's friend WGM Nelli Aginian returned to Yerevan with her.

Our condolences to Elina Danielian.

Armenian WGMs Elina Danielian and Nelli Aginian have scored 1 point each in the traditional festival which is being held in Groningen, the Netherlands.

9 chess players are leading with 2 points each.

Armenian WGMs Elina Danielian and Nelli Aginian won in the first round of the traditional festival which has begun in Groningen, the Netherlands.

68 chess players (mainly men) are taking part in the main tournament of the festival, where Armenian chess players are playing.

Armenian WGM Evgeniya Doluhanova (Ukraine) scored 6,5 points out of 9 and took the first prize in Bikova memorial which was held in Suzdal, Russia.

Champions of World Chess Olympiads Levon Aronian, Vladimir Akopian, Gabriel Sargissian, Tigran L. Petrosian, Artashes Minasian and Smbat Lputian were awarded the title of "Honoured master of sport of the Republic of Armenia".

18-Dec-2009 Levon Aronian Will Play in Linares  
 

Levon Aronian will take part in the traditional supertournament which is to be held in Linares, Spain, from February 12 to 25, 2010. Armenian GM's opponents will be GMs Veselin Topalov, Alexander Grischuk, Vugar Gashimov, Fransisco Vallejo Pons and, probably, Boris Gelfand.

The event of Linares is one of the tournaments of Grand Slam.

16-Dec-2009 Lilit Mkrtchian in the Top 10  
 

WGM Lilit Mkrtchian took position in the top 10 of the best sportsmen for 2009. Armenian sports journalists gave Lilit the 10th place in the list composed by them.

We remind that Mkrchian took the 2nd prize in the European Women's Championship this year.

14-Dec-2009 Armen Proudian - the Champion of South America  
 

Armenian 15-year-old chess player Armen Proudian (Brazil) scored 5,5 points out of 7 and took the title of the champion in the U16 group of the Youth Championship of South America which was held in Mendes, not far from Rio de Janeiro. With this important success, Armen Proudian qualifies for the title of FIDE Candidate Master.

12-Dec-2009 Sevag Mekhitarian Fulfilled Grandmaster's Norm  
 

23-year-old Armenian IM Krikor-Sevag Mekhitarian fulfilled grandmaster's norm in the 76th Brazil Championship which finished in city of Americana. Sevag scored 7,5 points out of 11 and shared the 3rd-4th places with GM Rafael Leitao.

GM Giovanni Vescovi took the title of the champion with 8,5 points. GM Gilberto Milos is the second with 8 points.

Armenian IM Krikor-Sevag Mekhitarian ended his game against Alexandr Fier with a draw in the last but one round of the 76th Brazil Championship which is being held in city of Americana. Now Sevak is in the 3rd place with 7 points.

Now the leaders are GMs Giovanni Vescovi and Gilberto Milos who have scored 8 and 7,5 points respectively out of 10. The leaders are going to play against each other in the final round.

Armenian IM Krikor-Sevag Mekhitarian lost GM Giovanni Vescovi in the 9th round of the 76th Brazil Championship which is being held in city of Americana. Now Sevak is in the 3rd place with 6,5 points. Vescovi and GM Gilberto Milos have each half a point more than Mekhitarian.

There are two rounds left before the end of the tournament.
 

9-Dec-2009 Sevag Mekhitarian's Brilliant Performance  
 

23-year-old Armenian IM Krikor-Sevag Mekhitarian continues to play excellently in the 76th Brazil Championship which is being held in city of Americana. After wining Everaldo Matsuura in the 8th round Mekhitarian scored 6,5 points and began to lead the table solely. The nearest opponents, GMs Gilberto Milos and Goivanni Vescovi, are behind Armenian chess player with half a point each.

Sevag Mekhitarian needs to score only one point in the three rounds left in order to fulfil grandmaster's norm.

8-Dec-2009 Melikset Khachiyan's Victory in American Open  
 

Armenian GM Melikset Khachiyan (USA) took the first prize among the 200 participants of the 45th Annual American Open which was held in Los Angeles. Khachiyan scored 6 points out of 8. IM Andranik Matikozyan (Armenia) took the second place with similar result. IM Tatev Abrahamian (USA) was also successful and was behind the winners with one point.
 

8-Dec-2009 Sevag Mekhitarian in the Championship of Brazil  
 

Armenian IM Krikor-Sevag Mekhitarian continues to play excellently in the 76th Brazil Championship which is being held in city of Americana. After another win in the 7th round Mekhitarian scored 5,5 points in total and shortened the difference between his and GM Goivanni Vescovi's points even more. Now Sevak is only half a point behind the leader.

There are four rounds left before the end of the tournament.

Armenian GM Sergey Kasparov (Belarus) scored 6 points out of 9 and took the 6th place among 46 participants in the tournament which was held in Figueira da Foz, Portugal.

GM Anton Kovalyov (Argentina) took the first prize with 7 points.

Armenian FM Movses Movsisyan (USA) scored 5,5 points out of 7 and took the 3rd place in the open which was held in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Movsisyan was one point behind the winner, FM Conrad Holt (USA).
