The World Youth Chess Championship will held from October 19 to 31, 2008, in Vung Tau, Vietnam. 15 Armenian chess players will participate in the event.

29-Sep-2008 Varuzhan Akobian's Success
 
Armenian GM Varuzhan Akobian (USA) ended the SPICE Cup with 5,5 points of 9 sharing the 1st-4th places with GMs Onischuk (USA), Harikrishna (India) and Kritz (Germany). 

This round-robin tournament was held in the Texas Tech University, USA.
 
27-Sep-2008 Armenian Clubs at European Club Cup
 
The 24th European Club Cup for Men and the 13th European Club Cup for Women will be held from October 16 to 24, 2008, in Kallithea, Greece.

Four Armenian teams (three men and one women) will participate in this great event.

The match between World Champion Vishvanatan Anand and Ex-Champion Vladimir Kramnik will be held from October 14 to November 2, 2008, in Bonn, Germany. The event will consist of 12 games and possible tie-breaks. The winner will be announced the World Champion.

26-Sep-2008 Varuzhan Akobian Leading at SPICE Cup  
 
Armenian GM Varuzhan Akobian (USA) is leading with 4 points of 6 in the SPICE (Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence) Cup. This round-robin tournament is held in the Texas Tech University, USA.

Ten GMs from USA, Iceland, Israel, Poland, India and Germany participate in the event.

Three rounds are left before the end of the tournament.

 Young talented Armenian chess players Samvel Ter-Sahakyan and Karen H. Grigoryan achieved a great success in the European Youth Championship held in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. FM Ter-Sahakyan took the silver medal in the U16 group, and CF Grigoryan gained the bronze medal in the U14 group.

Armenian IM Tigran Gharamian (France) scored 7 points of 9 and took the clear first place in the 3rd Riviera dei Cedri International Open in Italy.

Armenian GM David Arutinian, after beating GM Merab Gagunashvili in a tie-break with a 3,5:2,5 score, took the only vacancy in the Georgian National Team, thus securing his participation in the 38th World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany.
 
22-Sep-2008 Sevag Mekhitarian in Parla Open  
 
Armenian IM Krikor Sevag Mekhitarian (Brazil) scored 6,5 points of 9 and took the 6th place in the 23rd International Open held in Parla, Spain. Mekhitarian was one point behind the winners, IM Ortiz Suarez Isam (Cuba) and GM Vazquez Igarza Renier (Spain).

 138 chess players participated in the tournament.

 WGM Alexandra Kosteniuk (Russia) won the final match with WGM Hou Yifan (China) with a 2,5:1,5 score and became the new Women's World Champion.

Armenian GM Karen Movsziszian had a great victory in the 50th Imperia Festival in Italy. Movsziszian scored 8 points of 9 and still two rounds before the end of the event secured his clear first place. Karen was 1,5 point ahead of his runner-up, GM Boris Chatalbashev (Bulgaria).

Armenian IM Levon Babujian achieved a GM norm in the 2nd International Open held in Urmia, Iran. Babujian scored 9 points of 11 and shared the 1st-5th places with GM Gagunashvili (Georgia), GM Ibrahimov (Azerbaijan), GM Ghaem Maghami and FM Toufighi (Iran).

Two other Armenians, GM Giorgi Bagaturov (Georgia) and Aghasi Inants, shared the 12th-26th places with 8 points each.

GM Zaven Andriasian scored 6,5 points of 9 and shared the 3rd-9th places in the 5th open held in Kalamaria, Greece. Andriasian was only half a point behind the winners, GMs Gelashvili (Georgia) and Rozentalis (Lithuania).

WGM Nelly Aginian scored 5,5 and David Zakarian 5 points.

WIM Siranush Andriasian participates in the 1st International Women's Tournament dedicated to the Uzbekistan Independence Day from September 4 to 19, 2008, in Tashkent.

Two other Armenian chess players, WGM Evgeniya Doluhanova (Ukraine) and WFM Irina Gevorgyan (Uzbekistan), are also among participants.

The Gasik - Mkrtchian Match

WGM Lilit Mkrtchian beat WFM Anna Gasik (Poland) in the second game of the second round and will now play in the third round where she her opponent will be the winner of the WGM Harika Dronavalli (India) - WGM Anna Muzychuk (Slovenia) match. Here the scores are 1:1 for now.

WGM Katerina Rohonyan (USA) also played successfully with WGM Inna Gaponenko (Ukraine) in the second game of the second round, beat her and equalized the scores. The tie-breaks will be held today, on September 3.

1-Sep-2008 Mkrtchian and Rohonyan in the Second Round!
 

The Moser - Mkrtchian Match

After a dramatic struggle, Armenian WGM Lilit Mkrtchian beat WGM Eva Moser (Austria) 3,5:2,5 and will continue in the second round of the World Women's Championship. After three draws in the tie-break Lilit won in a blitz game. On September 1, Mkrtchian commences her second match with WFM Anna Gasik (Poland).

Another Armenian, WGM Katerina Rohonyan (USA) also succeeded in the tie-break of the first round. She made a great surprise by winning against tough WGM Natalia Zhukova (Ukraine) 2,5:1,5. Now Rohonyan will encounter another Ukrainian WGM Inna Gaponenko.

Armenian GM Rafael Vaganian beat Zoltan Gyimesi (Hungary) in the last round of the InventiChess GM Tournament held in Antwerp, Belgium. Thus, Vaganian scored 5 points of 9 and took the 4th place. Bu Xiangzhi (China) took the frist prize with 7 points.
