31-Aug-2008 World Women's Championship in Nalchik
 
WGM Lilit Mkrtchian (Armenia) again drew WGM Eva Moser (Austria) in the second game of the first round in the World Women's Chess Championship in Nalchik, Russia. Thus the main part of the Mkrtchian - Moser match ended 1:1. On August 31, Mkrtchian and Moser will meet for additional rapid and, if needed, blitz games. The winner of this match will continue the struggle in the second round where she will encounter WFM Anna Gasik (Poland).

WGM Katerina Rohonyan (USA) lost to WGM Natalia Zhukova (Ukraine). The match ended 1:1. On August 31, Rohonyan and Zhukova will meet for additional games. The winner of this match will continue the struggle in the second round where she will encounter WGM Inna Gaponenko (Ukraine).

The first half (17 rounds) of the Tal Memorial Blitz Final in Moscow, Russia, was held. The games of the second half will be played on August 30, 2008.

WGM Lilit Mkrtchian (Armenia) participates in the World Women's Chess Championship held from August 29, 2008, in Nalchik, Russia. Another Armenian chess player WGM Katerina Rohonyan (USA) plays in the event, too.

In the first round Mkrtchian encounters WGM Eva Moser (Austria), and Rohonyan's opponent is WGM Natalia Zhukova (Ukraine).

The championship is held by a knock-out system, and each match consists of two games.
 

29-Aug-2008 Sergei Movsesian in the Tal Blitz Cup Final
 

Armenian GM Sergei Movsesian (Slovakia) has scored 12,5 points of 18 and shared the 1st-2nd places with Grischuk (Russia) in the semi-final of the Tal Blitz Cup in Moscow, Russia.

Gabriel Sargissian finished the 12th with 11 points, and Tigran L. Petrosian took the 14th place with 10,5 points. Sergey Grigoriants (Russia) scored 7 points.

Movsesian, Grischuk, as well as Karjakin, Eljanov (Ukraine) and Grachev (Russia) are now entitled to participate in the final held on August 29 and 30, 2008. The world's top Grandmasters perform here, too. In total 18 players play.
 

29-Aug-2008 Varuzhan Akobian in Montreal
 

Armenian GM Varuzhan Akobian (USA) participates in the 9th round-robin International Tournament in Montreal, Canada. Ten tough chess players play in the event.

Akobian has so far scored 3,5 points of 5 and is now the second. GM Yuri Shulman (USA) is leading with 4 points.

Four rounds are left before the end of the tournament.
 

28-Aug-2008 The Tal Blitz Cup
 

60 Grandmasters participate in the semi-final of the Tal Blitz Cup held in Moscow, Russia. Five winners of the tournament will have the right to take part in the final.

On the first day of the event eight rounds were played. Now Tigran L. Petrosian has 4 points and is the 32nd. Gabriel Sargissian is on the 34th place with 3,5 points. Sergei Movsesian (Slovakia) has scored 5 points and is the 11th. Sergey Grigoriants (Russia) has 2,5 points.

The leader is Andrei Volokitin (Ukraine) with 6,5 points.

On August 28, the final day of the semi-final, ten more rounds will be held.
 

28-Aug-2008 Pavel Govciyan in the French Championship
 

IM Pavel Govciyan scored 6 points of 11 and shared the 4th-5th places in the round-robin French Championship (Tournament B) held in Pau. Govciyan was only half a point behind the winner IM Jean-Pierre Le Roux.
 

28-Aug-2008 Sevag Mekhitarian in Manresa
 

IM Krikor Sevag Mekhitarian (Brazil) scored 6 points of 9 and took the 10th place in the 35th open held in Manresa, Spain. Mekhitarian was one point behind the winner GM Lazaro Bruzon (Cuba).

27-Aug-2008 Sargissian and Petrosian in the Tal Blitz Cup
 

Armenian GMs Gabriel Sargissian and Tigran L. Petrosian participate in the semi-final of the Tal Blitz Cup on August 27 and 28, 2008, in Moscow, Russia. The winners of this selection tournament will play in the final where a number of the world's top chess players will perform, too.
 

27-Aug-2008 Armenian Chess Players in the Najdorf Memorial
 

Armenian GM Zaven Andriasian scored 6,5 points of 9 and took the 4th place in the Najdorf Memorial Open held in Warsaw, Poland. GM Avetik Grigoryan gained 5,5 points. The first prize went to GM Grzegorg Gajewski (Poland) with 7 points.

108 chess players participated in the event.
 

27-Aug-2008 Sevag Mekhitarian in Vlissingen
 

Armenian IM Krikor Sevag Mekhitarian (Brazil) scored 6,5 points of 9 and took the 8th place in the 12th Hogeschool Zeeland Open Tournament held in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. GM Lazaro Bruzon took the first prize with 7,5 points.

248 chess players participated in the tournament.
 

26-Aug-2008 Levon Aronian in the Grand Slam Final
 

Armenian GM Levon Aronian will participate in the Chess Grand Slam Final to be held from September 2 to 13, 2008, in Bilbao, Spain. Aronian's opponents will be GMs Anand, Ivanchuk, Carlsen, Topalov and Radjabov. This will be a double round tournament.

Armenian GM Rafael Vaganian scored 2 points of 3 and is now on the third place in the InventiChess GM round-robin tournament held in Antwerp, Belgium. The leader is GM Bu Xiangzhi (China) with 3 points.

GMs Ilia Smirin (Israel) and Mircea Parligras (Romania) shared the 1st-2nd places with 7 points.

Armenian GM Karen Movsziszian scored 7 points of 9 and took the second place in the 17th Open held in La Pobla de Lillet, Spain. GM Azer Mirzoev (Azerbaijan) took the first place.

25-Aug-2008 World U16 Chess Olympiad
 

The team of young Armenian chess players took the 5th place with 24 points of 40 in the World U16 Chess Olympiad held in Mersin, Turkey. The winner was India with 28,5 points.

26 teams participated in the event.
 

23-Aug-2008 Armenia Leading in the World U16 Chess Olympiad
 

The Armenian team beat England 4:0 in the 7th round of the World U16 Chess Olympiad held in Mersin, Turkey.

Up to now young Armenian chess players have beat the teams of Turkey-Isek (4:0), Greece (3,5:0,5), Turkey-A (3:1), India (3:0), drawn with Philippines (2:2) and lost to Russia (0:4).

Now the Armenian team has 19,5 points of 28 and shares the 1st-2nd places with India. The Philippines has 19, Russia 18,5, Azerbaijan 18, Turkey-A 17,5, Georgia 16 points.

In total 26 teams participate. Two rounds are left before the end of the tournament.

The central matched of the 8th round are: Azerbaijan - Armenia, Turkey-A - India, England - Philippines, Russia - Sri Lanka.

22-Aug-2008 Hrant Meklumyan's GM Norm
 

Young Armenian chess player Hrant Melkumyan achieved a Grandmaster norm in the World U20 Chess Championship held in Gaziantep, Turkey. This was the third time Hrant attains such a success. Up to now Melkumyan has achieved the GM norm in the Mazovian Chess Festival (Poland, 2007) and 4th Cup Rectors (Belgorod, Russia, 2008).
 

22-Aug-2008 Mher Hovhanisian's Success
 

Armenian IM Mher Hovhanisian scored 6 points of 9 and shared the 1st-2nd places with GM Jan Plachetka (Slovakia) in a round-robin tournament held in Charleroi, Belgium. IM Tigran Gharamian (France) took the 5th place with 5 points.

In a simultaneously held open tournament, Ruben Akhayan (Belgium) scored 6,5 points of 9 and came the 7th. The first prize went to IM Vincent Colin (France) with 7,5 points. 115 chess players participated in this event.
 

21-Aug-2008 Karen Movsziszian's Achievement
 

In the 34th Sitges Open in Spain, Armenian GM Karen Movsziszian scored 7 points of 9 and shared the 1st-8th places with IM Pakleza (Poland), IM Papp, IM Banusz (Hungary), IM Konguvel (India), GM Jankovic (Croatia), IM Cuartas (Columbia), GM Barsov (Uzbekistan).

186 chess players participated in the event.
 

21-Aug-2008 Armenian Chess Players in Najdorf Memorial
 

GM Zaven Andriasian scored 6,5 points of 9 and took the 4th place in the Najdorf Memorial Open held in Warsaw, Poland. He was only half a point behind the winner GM Grzegorz Gajewski (Poland). GM Avetik Grigoryan scored 5,5 points.
