Armenian GM Gabriel Sargissian participates in the VI Marx György Memorial held from July 25 to August 4, 2008, in Paks, Hungary. In this 15th category round-robin tournament Sargissian's opponents are GMs Alexander Beliavsky, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Daniel Stellwagen, Ferenc Berkes, Peter Acs.

26-July-2008 International Chess Festival in Biel
 
Top GMs Carlsen, Alekseev, Bacrot, Dominguez, Onischuk and Pelletier participate in the 41st Biel International Chess Festival. This round-robin tournament will be held till August 1, 2008, in Biel, Switzerland.

24-July-2008 Tigran Gharamian's Success in La Fere
 
Armenian IM Tigran Gharamian scored 6,5 points of 9 and shared the 3rd-6th places in the 7th La Fere Open in France. Gharamian was only half a point behind the winners, GMs Farid Abbasov (Azerbaijan) and Andrey Sumets (Ukraine).

142 chess players participated in the event.

23-July-2008 Aronian and Movsesian among the Best
 
The Association of Chess Professionals has published its list of world ten top chess players according to the results of the 2007-2008 events. Two Armenian Grandmasters are on high positions. Levon Aronian is the third and Sergei Movsesian is the fifth in the list.

The ACP gave the first place to GM Ivanchuk. GMs Anand, Morozevich, Nakamura, Shirov, Radjabov, Grischuk, Karjakin sum up the list.
 

23-July-2008 Three Armenians in the USA National Teams
 
The US Chess Federation has confirmed the compositions of the national teams to participate in the Chess Olympiad in Dresden this year. Three Armenians are involved, GM Varuzhan Akopian in the men's and WGM Katerina Rohonyan and WFM Tatev Abrahamyan in the women's teams.
 
22-July-2008 Rafael Vaganian in Antwerp Tournament
 
Armenian GM Rafael Vaganian will participate in an international round-robin tournament to be held August 23-31, 2008, in Antwerp, Belgium.

 Vaganian's opponents will be GMs Bu Xiangzhi (China), Miroshnichenko, Lahno (Ukraine), Werle, Timman (Netherlands), Gyimesi (Hungary), Schebler (Germany), IMs Michiels, Van der Stricht (Belgium).

22-July-2008 Gor Airapetian's Success
 
Armenian FM Gor Airapetian (Russia) scored 6,5 points of 10 and took the second prize in the Kings Gambit round-robin tournament held in Lipetsk, Russia. IM Igor Kovalenko (Ukraine) came the first with 8 points.
 
19-July-2008 Books Dedicated to Karen Asrian
 
  
Two new books by Gaguik Oganessian have been issued: "Karen Asrian. Unfinished Game" and "Asrian Memorial. Yerevan 2008". These publications are dedicated to famous Grandmaster Karen Asrian who passed away tragically several weeks ago.

The "Karen Asrian. Unfinished Game" familiarizes the readers with the chess route and creative work of the Olympic Champion Karen Asrian. His 64 best games, numerous photos, statistics, as well as opinions of famous chess players, officials, Asrian's fans depicting this talented Armenian young chess player found place in this book.

The "Asrian Memorial. Yerevan 2008" is devoted to the great chess event, the "Chess Giants" tournament which was renamed to "Karen Asrian Memorial" after the sudden and untimely passing of the young Armenian Grandmaster right before the start of the tournament. The book contains materials about the course of the event, brief biographic details of the eight participating prominent Grandmasters, all the games played during the tournament, numerous photos. Also, all the games ever played between Karen Asrian and each of the participants of the event are brought to the attention of the readers.

The books are intended for a wide audience of chess lovers.

The "Lake Sevan 2008" international tournament is held in Martuni, Armenia, till July 20, 2008. GMs Pantsulaia (Georgia), Zhou Jianchao (China), Zhigalko (Belarus), Meier (Germany), Amin (Egypt), Pashikian, A. Grigoryan, Z. Andriasian, IM Melkumyan, FM Ter-Sahakyan (Armenia) compete in this round-robin event organized by the Chess Academy of Armenia.

In the 6th round Armenia lost to China in both matches, 1:3 and 0,5:3,5.

Before the last round, China has secured its first place in the event.
 

15-July-2008 Dvorkovich Memorial
 
In the 5th round of the Dvorkovich Memorial, Armenia encountered Belarus. The first match ended 2:2, and in the second one Armenia won 2,5:1,5.

15-July-2008 Bray Rapidplay in Ireland
 
Armenian chess player Semyon Mkrtchyan scored 5 points of 6 and shared the 3rd-6th places in the Bray Rapidplay in Ireland.

Mkrtchyan was only half a point behind the winner, GM Alexander Baburin (Ireland).

78 chess players participated in the event.
 

14-July-2008 Knarik Mouradian Gained the Lebanon Cup
 
Armenian woman chess player WIM Knarik Mouradian gained the Lebanon Men's Cup. The chess players having taken the first ten places in the national championship participated in the event.
 
14-July-2008 Dvorkovich Memorial
 
The Armenian youth team lost to the Ukraine (1:3, 1:3) and then ended its matches with Russia 2:2 and 1:3 in the Dvorkovich Memorial in Moscow.

China is still leading with 16 points having won in all eight matches. Armenia has yet scored 7 points.
 

12-July-2008 "Bank King" will Play in the EuroCup 2008
 
The third Armenian team "Bank King" confirmed its participation in the 24th European Club Cup for Men to be held from October 10 to 24, 2008, in Kallithea, Greece. As a reminder, the "Mika" Yerevan and FIMA are the first and second teams from Armenia to participate. And the "Mika" Yerevan women's team will play in the 13th European Club Cup for Women.

GMs Vaganian, Lputian, Arutinian, Minasian, Anastasian, Kotanjian, IM Chibukhchian and Avetisyan will represent the "Bank King" in Kallithea.
 

11-July-2008 Armenia beat Germany
 
The Armenian youth team played with Germany in the second round of the Dvorkovich Memorial in Moscow. The first match ended 2:2, and in the second one Armenia won 3:1.

Zozan Shakryan playing on the girls' board of the Armenian team has so far won in all her four games.

Now Armenia is the second with 6 points. China is leading with 8 points.
 

10-July-2008 Tatev Abrahamyan - Member of the USA National Team
 
Armenian chess player WFM Tatev Abrahamyan will play in the composition of the USA Women's National Team in the Chess Olympiad 2008 in Dresden. This was the decision made by the US Chess Federation.
 
10-July-2008 The Armenian Team in Dvorkovich Memorial
 
The Memorial of famous chess arbiter Vladimir Dvorkovich commenced in Moscow. Youth teams from Armenia, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, China, Poland and France participate in the event. Two matches will be played in each round.

Here are the players of the Armenian team: Haik G. Vardanian, Haik Tamazyan, Hovhannes Petrosyan, Zozan Shakryan.

In the first round Armenia played with France and ended the first match 2:2, and won the second 4:0.
 

9-July-2008 Karen Movsziszian in Benasque Tournament
 
Armenian GM Karen Movsziszian scored 4,5 points of 6 in the 18th International Open held in Benasque, Spain. He is one point behind the leader GM Elizbar Ubilava (Spain).

547 chess players participate in the event.
 

8-July-2008 Gevorg Vardanyan's Success
 
Armenian chess player Gevorg Vardanyan (California) scored 7,5 points of 8 and shared the 1st-2nd places in the World Open U2200 Section held in Philadelphia, USA. 195 chess players participated in the tournament.

In the main tournament of the World Open GMs Varuzhan Akobian and Melikset Khachiyan scored 5,5 points of 9 each. GM Evgeny Najer (Russia) with 7 points took the first prize. 118 chess players participated in this event.
 

8-July-2008 Armenian Chess Players in Sort
 
GMs Sergey Kasparov (Belarus) and Karen Movsziszian (Armenia) scored 6,5 points of 9 each and shared the 9th-14th places in the 4th International Open held in Sort, Spain. GM Aleksander Delchev (Bulgaria) took the first prize with 8 points. 86 chess players participated in the event.
 
7-July-2008 Armenian Chess Players in the World Women's Championship
 
FIDE has published the pairings of the first round of the World Women's Championship to be held from August 29 to September 18, 2008, in Nalchik, Russia.

WGM Lilit Mkrtchian (Armenia) will encounter WGM Eva Moser (Austria). Another Armenian chess player WGM Katerina Rohonyan (USA) will play with WGM Natalia Zhukova (Ukraine).

The championship will be held by a knock-out system, and each match will consist of two games.

7-July-2008 International Youth Open in Jermuk
 
The International Youth Open ended in Jermuk, Armenia.

Here are the winners in each category: U10 - Shahin Zangane (Iran), U18 - Robert Aghasaryan (Armenia), U20 - Robert Hovhannisyan (Armenia).
 

5-July-2008 Akobian and Khachiyan in the World Open
 
GMs Varuzhan Akobian and Melikset Khachiyan scored 3 points of 4 each in the 36th World Open held in Philadelphia, USA. The Armenian chess players are only half a point behind the leaders, GMs Najer (Russia), A. Ivanov, Yermolinsky (USA) and Ftacnik (Slovakia).

Three rounds are still ahead before the end of the tournament.

103 chess players participate in the event.
 

5-July-2008 Maria Sarguis in Buenos Aires Tournament
 
Armenian chess player Maria Sarguis scored 5,5 points of 9 and took the 22nd place in the men's international open tournament held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The winner was GM Ruben Felgaer (Argentina) with 8,5 points. 134 chess players participate in the event.

Top GMs Kramnik, Mamedyarov, Leko, Ivanchuk, Van Wely, Nepomniachtchi, Naiditch and Gustafsson compete in the Sparkassen Chess-Meeting in Dortmund, Germany.

2-July-2008 Aronian and Movsesian in Corus 2009
 
The winner of the main tournament of Corus 2008 Levon Aronian will compete in the 71st Corus Chess Tournament to be held from January 16 to February 1, 2009, in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. Another Armenian chess player Sergei Movsesian, who won in the group B of Corus 2008, will also play in the group A of Corus 2009.

Carlsen, Morozevich, Ivanchuk, Kamsky, Radjabov, Karjakin, Van Wely, Stellwagen, Smeets have also confirmed their participation in the event.

The complete list of 14 participants in all will be announced in October 2008.
