The Chicago Open 2008 finished with an excellent success of GMs Varuzhan Akobian (USA) and Tigran L. Petrosian (Armenia). Armenian chess players scored 5,5 points of 7 each. GM Nakamura (USA) scored just as much. The two top on tie-breaks were Akobian and Petrosian who had a play-off Armageddon game. Akobian won and took the first prize, with the second prize going to Petrosian.

in the USA Championship
 
Armenian WGM Katerine Rohonyan and WFM Tatev Abrahamyan scored 6 points of 9 each and shared the 3rd-4th places in the USA Women's Championship held in Tulsa, Oklahoma. With 7,5 points, WGMs Anna Zatonskih and Irina Krush shared the 1st-2nd places, and after the play-off Zatonskih became USA Women Champion 2008.

In the USA Men's Championship, GM Varuzhan Akobian shared the 4th-6th places 5,5 points. GM Yury Shulman (7 points) became USA Men Champion 2008.

14 year-old Armenian chess player Samvel Ter-Sahakyan achieved a Grandmaster norm at the 9th European Individual Championship held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Ter-Sahakyan had reached such an achievement for the first time in the 68th Armenian Championship in January of this year.

Samvel Ter-Sahakyan will become the youngest Grandmaster in the whole Armenian chess history.

Armenian WGMs Lilit Mkrtchian and Elina Danielian achieved a big success in the European Championship in Plovdiv. They are entitled to participate in the World Women Championship to be held in 2009.

Armenian GM Gabriel Sargissian, according to the results of the European Championship in Plovdiv, will participate in the World Cup in 2009.
