The Armenian Chess Federation is organizing a “Chess Giants Yerevan 2008” Rapid Round-Robin Tournament with the participation of world's eight top Grandmasters from June 8 to 15, 2008, in Yerevan, Armenia.

Armenian IM Krikor Sevag Mekhitarian (Brazil) scored 5 points of 9 and shared the 3rd-5th place in a tournament held in Hebraica. GMs Leitao and Milos (Brazil) shared the 1st-2nd places with 6,5 points.

Armenian GM Levon Aronian will participate in the M-Tel Masters Tournament to be held from May 7 (official opening) to 18, 2008, in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Aronian's opponents will be GMs Topalov (Bulgaria), Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Radjabov (Azerbaijan), Cheparinov (Bulgaria), Bu Xiangzhi (China).

Armenian GM Vladimir Akopian became Russian Club Cup Champion 2008 in the composition of the "Ural" team. The tournament was held in Dagomis (near Sochi).

Armenian IM Grigor Sevak Mekhitarian (Brazil) scored 5 points of 8 and before the last round is on the 3th place in a round-robin tournament held in Hebraica (near Sao Paulo). GM Leitao (Brazil) is leading with 6 points.

GM David Arutinian (Georgia) scored 6,5 points of 9 and took the 9th place in the Dubai Open 2008. GM Tigran Kotanjian (Armenia) was the 15th with 6 points.

GMs So (Philippines), Gagunashvili (Georgia), Ghaem Maghami (Iran) and Li Chao scored 7 points. According to the tie-break, the first prize went to So.

After the end of the main tournament of the Ruy López Festival in Mérida (Spain), a rapid open tournament is held on April 12 and 13, 2008. The participants of the event have to commence their games with the Ruy López (Spanish) opening.

Among the 84 participating chess players is Armenian GM Gabriel Sargissian. His opponents are, in particular, GMs Adams (England), Zhang Pengxiang, Hou Yifan, Yu Shaoteng (China), Caruana (Italy), Granda Zuniga (Peru), I. Khamrakulov (Spain), Koneru (India), Guliyev (Azerbaijan), Campora (Argentina), Strikovic (Serbia), Komljenovic (Croatia).

The start of the rounds is on April 12 at 13:30 and on April 13 at 13:00 (Yerevan time). The tournament site is here.

On April 11, 2008, on the day-off of the Dubai Open, a blitz tournament with the participation of 78 chess players was held.

Armenian GM Tigran Kotanjian scored 6,5 points of 9 and took the 8th place. GM David Arutinian (Georgia) ended on the 15th place with 6 points.

With 7,5 points, GMs Gadir Guseinov (Azerbaijan) and Yuri Drozdovskij (Ukraine) shared the 1st-2nd places.

7-Apr-2008 Zaven Andriasian among Top Four
 
In the quarter-finals of the ICC Internet tournament GM Zaven Andriasian beat the former USA champion GM Hikaru Nakamura 3,5:2,5 and appeared among the top four players.

In the semi-finals, after tough struggle, Andriasian lost to GM Ronen Har-Zvi (Israel) 2,5:3,5 and shared the 3rd-4th places in the tournament.

The winner was Jorge Sammour-Hasbun (Palestine).

Armenian GM Varuzhan Akobian (USA) scored 7 points of 9 and shared the 3rd-4th places with GM Li Shilong (China) in an open tournament held in Bangkok, Thailand. Xiu Deshun took the first place with 8 points.

32 best players of the ICC Internet tournament started the knockout finals. Armenian GM Zaven Andriasian beat IM Robert Hess 4:2 in the 1/16 final, as well as IM Rustam Khusnutdinov 3:0 in the 1/8 final. Other Armenian chess players, GM Tigran L. Petrosian, IM Avetik Grigoryan and IM Hrant Melkumian, left the tournament.

On April 5, eight top players will continue the struggle. In the 1/4 final, Andriasian encounters GM Hikaru Nakamura.

Armenian GM Varuzhan Akobian (USA) scored 5,5 points of 7 in an open tournament held in Bangkok, Thailand. Akobian is only half a point behind the three leaders, Xiu Deshun, GM Li Shilong (China), and IM Bitoon (Philippines).

Armenian GM Tigran L. Petrosian, GM Zaven Andriasian, IM Avetik Grigoryan and IM Hrant Melkumian played very successfully in the qualification tournaments of the ICC event and are now entitled to participate in the final to be held on April 4 and 5, 2008.

Armenian GM Smbat Lputian scored 6,5 points of 10 and took the 17th place in the 3rd Kolkata Open Tournament.

GM Laznicka (Czech Republic) won the tournament with 7,5 points. With the same result, GM Sasikiran (India) came the second.

The Armenian Chess Federation is organizing an International Open Rapid Chess Tournament which will be held from June 12 to 15, 2008, in Yerevan, Armenia.
