25-Mar-2008 International Titles to Armenian Chess Players
 
FIDE awarded new titles to several Armenian chess players. Yuri Hambardumian and Arman Hayrapetian received International Master titles. At the same time Gevorg Harutjunyan and Ovik Hayrapetian were conditionally awarded with a Grandmaster and an International Master titles, respectively. The title decisions for these two chess players will be valid after their Elos reach 2500 and 2400, respectively.

Armenian IM Krikor Sevag Mekhitarian (Brazil) scored 2,5 points of 4 in the Bobby Fischer Memorial held from March 11 to 19, 2008, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Mekhitarian is behind the leader IM Flores Rios (Chile) with one point.

Armenian GM Sergey Galdunts scored 5 points of 9 and took the 28th place among 167 participants in the 24th International Open held in Bad Worishofen, Germany.

Six GMs shared the 1st-6th places with 7 points. Vladimir Burmakin (Russia) took the first prize after the tiebreak.
 

13-Mar-2008 Levon Aronian in FIDE Grand Prix
 
FIDE has announced the final schedule of the Grand Prix and the breakdown of participants. Each player has to participate in 4 of 6 tournaments of the Grand Prix.

Per Levon Aronian's wish, FIDE has included him in the composition of the tournaments of Sochi (30 July-15 August, 2008), Montreux, Elista and Karlovy Vary (2009). Aronian will not play in Baku and Doha.

Armenian IM Krikor Mekhitarian (Brazil) participates in the Bobby Fischer Memorial held from March 11 to 19, 2008, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Mekhitarian's opponents are GMs Panno, Slipak (Argentina), Rodriguez (Uruguay) and a number of International Masters.

6-Mar-2008 Melkumian and Grigoryan Achieved Grandmaster Norms
 
Armenian young chess players Hrant Melkumian and Avetik Grigoryan achieved Grandmaster Norms in a Round Robin Tournament held in Belgorod, Russia. Grigoryan reaches such an achievement for the third time, and Melkumian for the second.

In Belgorod, Melkumian scored 7,5 points of 9 and took the clear first place. Grigoryan shared the 2nd-3rd places with 6,5 points.
 

5-Mar-2008 Gevorg Harutjunyan Shared the First Place in Kharkov
 
Armenian chess player Gevorg Harutjunyan scored 6 points of 9 and shared the 1st-3rd places with IM V. Onischuk and GM Brodsky (Ukraine) in the Rector's Cup Tournament held in Kharkov, Ukraine. IM Hrair Simonian was behind the winners with one point.

In the women's tournament, WGM Evgeniya Doluhanova (Ukraine) scored 5 points and was behind the winner WIM Sukandar (Indonesia) with one point.
 

4-Mar-2008 Petrosian and Kotanjian - Iranian Club Champions
 
Armenian GMs Tigran L. Petrosian and Tigran Kotanjian, leading the "Rahan" club, won the Iran Team Championship. In the last, important match, "Rahan" beat "Sanaranavt" with 3:1: The latter was led by GMs Gashimov and Guseinov (Azerbaijan). The decisive point was gained by Petrosian who beat Gashimov on the first board.

Armenian GM Karen Asrian's team became the Iran Club Cup winner. Asrian won in two and drew in one game.

Armenian GM Sergey Kasparov (Belarus) scored 7 points of 9 and took the second place in the 3rd Open of West Toulouse held in Colomiers, France. Kasparov was only half a point behind the winner IM Ramon Mateo (Dominican Republic).

GM David Arutinian (Georgia) took the 6th place with 6,5 points.

Sergey Kasparov's spouse WFM Tatiana Kasparova won the second prize among the women with 6 points.
