In the 8th round, Levon Aronian beat Veselin Topalov and is now the second after the World Champion Vishvanatan Anand.

Armenian Chess Players Achieved International Norms |

Armenian young chess player Avetik Grigoryan achieved a Grandmaster norm in the Fajr Open 2008 in Ourmia, Iran. Grigoryan had achieved this norm for the first time in the World U20 Junior Championship, 2007, Yerevan.
Liana Aghabekian achieved a Woman International Master norm in the Ourmia women's tournament. Earlier Liana had such an achievement in the Armenian Women Championship, 2007, Yerevan.
Another young player David Kalashian achieved an International Master norm in the Aeroflot-Open, 2008, Moscow, Russia. This is his third time success after the norms in the World U20 Junior Championship, 2007, Yerevan, and in Moscow Open, 2008.

A number of Armenian chess players perform very successfully in the B and C tournaments of the Aeroflot-Open 2008.
In the B tournament, David Kalashian and Yuri Hambardzumian gained 7 points of 9 and shared the 1st-7th places. According to the tie-break, Kalashian ended the 2nd, and Hambardzumian the 6th. The first prize went to Mirzanurov (Russia).
In the C tournament, Vardan Khojayan took the second place with 7,5 points, with only half a point yielding to the winner Abramov (Russia).

Aronian in FIDE Grand Prix

Levon Aronian will participate in the FIDE Grand Prix tournaments to be held in 2008/2009.
FIDE has already announced the dates and venues for these tournaments:
April 20th – May 6th 2008, Baku, Azerbaijan
July 30th – August 15th 2008, Krasnoyarsk (or other Russian city), Russia
December 13th – 29th, 2008, Doha, Qatar
April 14th – 28th, 2009, Montreux, Switzerland
August 1st – 17th, 2009, Elista, Russia
December 7th – 23rd, 2009, Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
Reserve cities are Istanbul and Teheran.
Each tournament will be a 14 player all play all. Each participant of the Grand Prix has to play in 4 of 6 tournaments. Aronian has announced that he will not participate in the first tournament in Baku. He will most probably play in the next tournament in Russia.
The winner of the Grand Prix will play with the winner of the 2009 World Cup for the right to challenge the World Champion in 2010.

In the last 10th round of the Gibtelecom Festival held in Gibraltar, Great Britain, Armenian GMs T. L. Petrosian and Var. Akobian beat accordingly IM Socko (Poland) and IM Bellin (England).
Petrosian and Akobian gained 7 points of 10 each. They are behind GMs Nakamura (USA) and Bu Xiangzhi (China) with one point. After the tie-break the first prize went to Nakamura.
