In Round 9, GM Var. Akobian (USA) beat IM Bradford (USA), while GM T. L. Petrosian GM lost to GM Nakamura (USA).

After nine rounds, both Petrosian and Akobian have 6 points.

Before the last round, the leaders are GM Bu Xiangzhi (China) and GM Efimenko (Ukraine) with 7,5 points.

30-Jan-2008 Aronian will play in the "Grand Slam" Final
 
Armenian GM Levon Aronian will contend for a new great chess prize in the final of the "Grand Slam" to be held from September 2 to 17, 2008, in Bilbao, Spain. Aronian is entitled to play in this event as winner of Corus 2008 in Wijk aan Zee.

Also the winners of Morelia/Linares, Sofia and Mexico of 2008 and two other prominent Grandmasters will perform in Bilbao.

28-Jan-2008 Aronian Won the Corus 2008!
 

Armenian GM Levon Aronian took the first prize at the main A Group of Corus 2008 held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. Aronian gained 8 points of 13, just as much as Magnus Carlsen, but he had a better tiebreak score (50.00 against 48.50).

As a reminding, Aronian was also the winner of Corus 2007.

Armenian GMs Tigran L. Petrosian and Varuzhan Akobian participate in the 6th Gibtelecom Chess Festival held from January 22 to 31, 2008, in Gibraltar, Great Britain.

In Round 3, Akobian (USA) had his third victory, this time over IM Wippermann (Germany). Petrosian lost to GM Stefanova (Bulgaria).

After three rounds, Akobian, with 3 points, shares the 1st-4th places with GMs Beliavsky (Slovenia), Banikas (Greece) and Stefanova (Bulgaria).

Young chess player Samvel Ter-Sahakyan after completing an International Master norm also fulfilled a Grandmaster norm after the 9th round of the 68th Armenian Championship.

This is an unprecedented case in the rich history of Armenian chess, when an 14-year-old player fulfills a GM norm.

Armenian GM Karen Movsziszian gained 7,5 points of 9 and took a clear first place in the 33rd International Open held in Sevilla, Spain.

GMs Khamrakulov (Spain), Spraggett (Canada), Mirzoev (Azerbaijan), Lopez Martinez (Spain), Epishin (Russia), Paunovic (Serbia), Korneev (Russia) and IM J. Ivanov (Bulgaria) was behind Movsziszian with half a point.

FIDE has published the list of players of the Grand Prix tournament cycle (2008/2009). Armenian GM Levon Aronian is among the participants.

FIDE has also enrolled GMs Anand, Kramnik, Topalov, Kamsky, Shirov, Carlsen, Karjakin, Ivanchuk, Mamedyarov, Leko, Morozevich, Radjabov, Gelfand in the list of participants.
 

8-Jan-2008 Knarik Mouradian is Champion of Arab World
 

Armenian WIM 24-year-old Knarik Mouradian (Lebanon) became Woman Champion of Arab World for the forth time. She gained 7,5 points of 9 in the championship held in Yemen and took the clear first place. Mouradian had 6 wins, 3 draws and no loss. Knarik also fulfilled a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) norm.

Earlier Mouradian became champion of Arab world in 1999, 2002 and 2004.

The 68th Armenian Championship will be held from January 7 to 21, 2008, in Yerevan. GMs Smbat Lputian, Karen Asrian, Tigran L. Petrossian, Artashes Minasian, Ashot Anastasian, Zaven Andriasian, Tigran Kotanjian, Arman Pashikian, Arsen Yegiazarian, Tigran Nalbandian, Ara Minasian, IM Lebon Babujian, FM Samvel Ter-Sahakian will participate in the tournament.

On January 7, 2008, at 17:00 (Yerevan time), the opening of the championship will be held in the Petrossian Chess House.

The first round is on January 8, at 15:00.
