29-Dec-2007 Gaguik Oganessian was honored with Movses Khorenatsi Award
 

On December 28, 2008, President of Republic of Armenia Robert Kocharian rewarded President of FIDE Zone 1.5, Chairman of FIDE Mass Media (CHIPS) Commission, FIDE Executive Board Member Gaguik Oganessian with a governmental high award after Movses Khorenatsi.

Oganessian is at the same time the General Secretary of Armenian Chess Federation, Editor-in-Chief of Chess in Armenia Magazine, 6th World Amateur Chess Champion, International Chess Organizer, author of 36 chess books.
 

29-Dec-2007 Gaguik Oganessian was rewarded with FIDE Golden Sign
 
On December 28, 2008, President of FIDE, President of Republic of Kalmykia Kirsan Ilyumzhinov awarded a FIDE Golden Sign to Gaguik Oganessian for the feverish activity in the chess field. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, on behalf of FIDE Presidential Board and on his personal behalf, congratulated Gaguik Oganessian on the occasion of his 60th birthday anniversary.
 
27-Dec-2007 Levon Aronian in Morelia/Linares Tournament
 
Armenian GM Levon Aronian will participate in the Morelia/Linares 2008 super-tournament. His opponents will be Vishvanatan Anand (India), Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine), Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria), Peter Leko (Hungary), Teymour Radjabov (Azerbaijan), Alexei Shirov (Spain), Magnus Carlsen (Norway).

The first half of the event will be held in Morelia, Mexico, February 15-23, 2008, with the second half in Linares, Spain, February 28-March 7, 2008.

26-Dec-2007 Gevorg Harutjunyan Fulfilled a Grandmaster Norm
 
Armenian chess player Gevorg Harutjunyan fulfilled a GM norm for three times, one after another, in international tournaments held in Alushta, Ukraine.

In the "Alushta 2007-1" tournament Gevorg took the 2nd place, in "Alushta 2007-3" he shared the 1st-2nd places. And in "Alushta 2007-6" Harutjunyan took solely the first place.
 

25-Dec-2007 Sevag Mekhitarian in Brazilian Championship
 
Armenian IM Krikor Sevag Mekhitarian gained 6,5 points of 11 and took the 4th place in the 74th Brazilian Championship held in Rio de Janeiro.

GM Giovanni Vescovi became the champion with 9 points.
 

24-Dec-2007 Lilit Mkrtchian's Success
 
Armenian WGM Lilit Mkrtchian gained 6,5 points of 9 and shared the 1st-2nd places with WGM Natalia Zdebskaja (Ukraine) in the Bykova Memorial held in Vladimir, Russia.

Another Armenian participant WIM Siranush Andriasian took the 5th place with 4,5 points.
 

24-Dec-2007 Armenian Chess Players in Pamplona
 
Armenian GMs Gabriel Sargissian and Sergei Movsesian participate in the 17th International Tournament held December 22-29, 2007, in Pamplona, Spain.

In this event of 17th category, GMs Wang Yue (China), Vallejo Pons (Spain), Beliavsky (Slovenia), Jobava (Georgia), Rodshtein (Israel), Khamrakulov (Spain) also perform.

Armenian WGM Lilit Mkrtchian has 5 points of 7 sharing the 2nd-3rd places with WGM Natalia Zdebskaja (Ukraine) in the Bykova Memorial held in Vladimir, Russia. Mkrtchian is behind the leader WGM Irina Vasilevich (Russia) with half a point.

22-Dec-2007 International Norms of Armenian Chess Players
 
Armenian WIM Lilit Galojan has fulfilled a Woman Grandmaster norm for the third time in an international tournament held in Tbilisi, Georgia. Galojan has also fulfilled a Man International Master norm for the first time.

Another Armenian player IM Vigen Mirumian (Czech Republic) has fulfilled a Grandmaster Norm for the third time in a tournament in Tbilisi.
 

21-Dec-2007 Karen Movsziszian in El Sauzal
 
Armenian GM Karen Movsziszian gained 7,5 points of 9 and shared the 3rd-5th places at the 8th International Rapid Tournament held in El Sauzal, Spain. Movsziszian was behind the winners, GMs Sinisa Drazic (Serbia) and Mikheil Mchedlishvili (Georgia), only with half a point.

262 chess players participated in the tournament.
 

21-Dec-2007 Sergey Kasparov in Venice
 
Armenian GM Sergey Kasparov (Belarus) gained 4,5 points of 6 and shared the 2nd-6th places at the Autumn Master Tournament held in Venice, Italy. Kasparov was behind the leader, GM Georgy Timoshenko (Ukraine), only with half a point.

44 chess players participated in the tournament.

Armenian IM Krikor Sevag Mekhitarian (Brazil) gained 6 points of 9 and shared the 2nd-4th places at the International Chess Festival held in the city of Americana, Brazil.

GM Rafael Leitao (Brazil) was the winner with 7 points.

Players from Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil and Serbia performed in the tournament.
 

17-Dec-2007 Gata Kamsky - Winner of World Chess Cup
 
GM Gata Kamsky (USA) beat GM Alexei Shirov with 2,5:1,5 in the final match of World Chess Cup held in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia. Kamsky conquered the World Cup and is now entitled to play a match with GM Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) in 2008. The winner of this duel will play with the World Champion in 2009.

Armenian GMs Levon Aronian, Gabriel Sargissian and Sergei Movsesian will participate in the Corus Chess 2008 to be held in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands, from January 11 to 27, 2008.

Aronian will play in the main, A-Group, and his opponents will be Anand, Ivanchuk, Kramnik, Topalov, Leko, Mamedyarov, Radjabov, Gelfand, Adams, Carlsen, Polgar, Eljanov, Van Wely.

Sargissian and Movsesian will perform in the B-Group, with Bacrot, Cheparinov, Harikrishna, Krasenkow, Short, Stellwagen, Nepomniachtchi, Humpy, L'Ami, Sweets, Hou Yifan, Spoelman.

Armenian GMs Levon Aronian and Vladimir Akopian left the World Chess Cup held in Khanty-Mansiysk (Russia) after the 4th round. Akopian yielded to Alexei Shirov (Spain) with 0,5:1,5, and Aronian lost to Dmitry Jakovenko (Russia) after the tie-break with 1,5:2,5.
