The tournament will continue in Linares
 
The first half of the tournament of eight prominent chess players ended in Morelia, Mexico. Very successful was Armenian GM Levon Aronian's performance who gained 4,5 points of 7 and is second. Aronian is behind the leader Peter Leko (Hungary) with only half a point.

After a break of several days the event will re-commence on March 3, 2006, in Linares, Spain. Our website will continue publishing Levon Aronian's games online.

Pavel Govciyan fulfilled an IM norm
 
Armenian chess player Pavel Govciyan (France) took the second place at the 4th Nancy Chess Festival. Govciyan gained 6 points of 9, just as much as Martin Becker (Germany) did, but was ahead on tie-break. The winner was IM Vaszilij Sikula (Ukraine) with 7,5 points.

Govciyan fulfilled an International Master norm in Nancy. This is the third time he reaches such success.

Cappelle la Grande Tournament
 
Armenian chess player GM Sergey Grigoriants (Russia) played well in the big open held in Cappelle la Grande, France. Grigoriants gained 7 points of 9 and shared the 2nd-9th places. He was behind the leader GM Alexander Moiseenko (Ukraine) with half a point.

The performance of representatives of Armenia GM Tigran Nalbandian and WGM Elina Danielian was successful, too. They shared the 10th-35th places with 6,5 points.

624 players took part in the event.

Pairings of World Women's Chess Championship 2006
 
FIDE has published the pairings of the World Women's Chess Championship 2006.

In Round 1 Lilit Mkrtchian (Armenia) plays with Ruan Lufei (China), Elina Danielian (Armenia) with Christina-Adele Foisor (Romania), Almira Skripchenko (France) with Jovanka Houska (England), Natalia Khoudgarian (Canada) with Alexandra Kosteniuk (Russia).

Another Armenian chess player Tatev Abrahamian (USA) who was also entitled to participate in WWCC 2006, preferred the USA Men's Championship to take place in March as well.

Diana Arutyunova - Champion of the Ukraine
 
Armenian chess player WGM Diana Arutyunova became Champion under 20 of the Ukraine. In the championship held in Lviv Arutyunova had no loss, gained 8 points of 9 and solely took the first place.

David Arutinian fulfilled a GM norm
 
As informed earlier, Armenian chess player David Arutinian (Georgia) took the first place in the Aeroflot Open 2006 Tournament B. As the organizers advised, Arutinian also fulfilled a GM norm in this event.

Petrosian's and Akopian's achievements in Aeroflot Open
 
Armenian chess players GMs Tigran L. Petrosian and Vladimir Akopian performed well in the main tournament (A1) of Aeroflot Open 2006. They gained 6 points of 9 and took the 7th and 8th places among 93 participants.

The first prize went to GM Baadur Jobava (Georgia) with 6,5 points.

David Arutinian's great success in Moscow
 
Armenian chess player IM David Arutinian (Georgia) took the first prize in the Aeroflot Open 2006 Tournament A2. He gained 6,5 points of 9, just as 11 more players did, but was the first on tie-break.

154 chess players participated in Tournament A2.

Davit Petrosian's great achievement
 
Armenian chess player IM Davit G. Petrosian achieved great success at the Aeroflot Open 2006 Tournament B in Moscow. He gained 7,5 points of 9 and solely took the first prize.

Another Armenian chess player Arman Hayrapetian performed on high level, too, taking the second place with 7 points.

Finally, we have to congratulate also young player Avetik Grigoryan who gained 6,5 points and fulfilled an IM norm.

129 chess players participated in Tournament B.

Tournaments A1 and A2 of the Aeroflot Open 2006 will conclude today.

Armen Petrossian's success
 
Armenian chess player Armen Petrossian (France) took the second prize in a rapid open held in Toulon. Petrossian gained 6,5 points of 8 and was behind the winner, GM Krum Georgiev (Bulgaria), only with half a point. Then followed IM Benoit Lepelletier (France), GM Glenn Flear (England), GM Petar Velikov (Bulgaria) with 6 points.

73 players participated in the event.

Sevag Mekhitarian's achievement
 
Armenian chess player Sevag Mekhitarian (Brazil) gained 6,5 points of 7 and took the first place in a traditional big tournament in Itu in the state of Sao Paulo. In the same tournament another Armenian chess player IM Jefferson Pelikian with 5,5 points shared the 12-13th places.

In all 268 chess players performed in this event.

Jefferson Pelikian's success
 
IM Jefferson Pelikian (Brazil) gained 9 points of 11 and took the first place in a tournament dedicated to the anniversary of Sao Paulo. This time Sevag Mekhitarian took the 5th place with 8 points.

The tournament had 64 participants.

David Arutinian's success
 
Armenian chess player IM David Arutinian won the silver medal at the Georgian Championship 2006. He had no loss and gained 7,5 points of 11, as much as GM Tamaz Gelashvili did, but beat him on tie-break (1,5:0,5).

GM Giorgi Kacheishvili became Champion of Georgia 2006 with 8,5 points.

Arutinian is included in the composition of the Georgian Olympic Team and will participate in the Turin World Chess Olympiad.

Levon Aronian in Linares tournament
 
Armenian chess player GM Levon Aronian will play in the traditional Linares super tournament. This year the first half of the event will be held in Morelia, Mexico, February 18-26, 2006. And Linares, Spain, will host the second half of the tournament. Players: Veselin Topalov, Peter Leko, Vassily Ivanchuk, Peter Svidler, Etienne Bacrot, Levon Aronian, Francisco Vallejo and Teimour Radjabov.

Armenian chess players in Aeroflot-Open
 
34 chess players from Armenia will participate in the Aeroflot-Open to commence on February 8, 2006, in Moscow. In particular, these are GMs Vladimir Akopian, Karen Asrian, Gabriel Sargissian, Ashot Anastasian, Artashes Minasian, Tigran L. Petrosian, Arsen Yegiazarian, Tigran Nalbandian, Ara Minasian, Elina Danielian and others.

Armenian chess TV program again on Sundays!
 

We invite the attention of chess lovers to the fact that the chess program commented by Gaguik Oganessian on Armenian National TV (H1) channel will be again broadcasted on Sundays, at 10:30 (Yerevan time).

By satellite television the program will be on the same time but will also be repeated on Sundays, at 21:00 (Yerevan time).

Beniamin Galstian's victory in Tehran
 
Armenian chess player IM Beniamin Galstian took the first place at the 14th Fajr Open held in Tehran, Iran. He gained 7,5 points of 9, as much as GMs Neverov (Ukraine), Gleyzerov (Russia), Ghaem Maghami, IMs Mallahi, Ghane, FM Ardeshi (Iran) did, but was the first on tie break.

278 players participated in the tournament.

Movses Movsisyan's victory in Oklahoma
 
Armenian chess player, Oklahoma State Champion FM Movses Movsisyan (USA) won the first prize in an open held in Oklahoma City, USA. He gained 4,5 points of 5, as Sirin (Turkey) did, but was ahead according to tie break.
